good computer from a great seller

Product was good but the service from the seller was great. Would recommend purchasing from Compenet. It's hard to find towers with windows 7 pro pre installed. I don't think it says it in the listing but it's a 32bit platform. I was able to install and run my AutoCad 2006.

Excellent computer

First of all, this is an excellent computer-fast, nice to look at, excellent OS, and enjoyable to work with. Definitely worth the price (and if you configure a SIMILAR PC on the Wintel side, you'll obtain an excellent price/performance ratio)

Secondly, the pure conjecture and shallowness of some of the statements made on these reviews, namely the performance of Adobe apps, the migration of users to the PC side as exhibited by the dropping Mac sales of certain apps, etc is not helpful and quite frankly false. Adobe quit producing some Mac apps, but also just put out one of the best suites on either platform- Adobe CS, which is optimized for the G4 and G5. You can search for "benchmarks" until your blue in the face, and you will find some in your favor. But even an exec at Adobe recently quipped that the G5 is the best and fastest platform for Adobe products (search macnn.com or one of those sites)

Also, don't forget that Apple has developed a market leading crop of professional software as well, including the award winning Final Cut Pro (which has probably accounted for some of the "drop in Adobe market share" that was spoken of earlier). Take a gander at their website for more info.

The only ding that I give the G5 is the wake from sleep issue. This is an issue that has affected both the Wintel side and the Mac side, and although I have not been hampered by this issue personally, it seems to be a significant blemish among the Mac community. The latest OS update (10.3.4) fixed the issue for many users though.

Keep an eye on other Apple technologies as well, including Firewire (now a wireless spec) and how that may influence your workflow and efficiency.

After using this particular Mac for years...

I'll tell you it has been well worth the money. For 5 years it has worked just as well as the day I got it - in fact, even better, because I replaced a bad RAM chip (very common in ALL computers, and for many Mac and PC users the cause of random, unexplained crashing), increased the RAM, and over time found more products that supported the dual processors. OS X 10.4 ("Tiger") worked awesomely.It's quiet (the 9 fans run at a speed according to processor load, and most of the time it's quite slowly) and built like a tank (hard to damage that exterior).The two issues I had with mine were a *slight* sticking of the Eject button on the keyboard and the fact that VirtualPC needed an upgrade to work with the G5 processor (Microsoft had just bought VirtualPC and took their sweet time on the new version). And VirtualPC ran like molasses compared to running Windows with Boot Camp on an Intel Mac.But as I prepare to find a new owner for my dual 1.8 G5, I can say I will miss it, which is the opposite of what I have to say about my Dell.

FAST & STABLE

Folks should be reading the technical specs--this is not the original machine that benchmarked out ahead of pentium machines. The buss speed and the front side cache are what was on the single processor-based machine. So the old Dual 1.8 machines are actually faster, since Apple bumped up the old 1.8's to 2.0 now. (I have one of each in my family.) I have not had crash problems, and both machines are very, very fast on very large photoshop files. These are both by far the most stable machines of any kind I have worked on, and the interface is a joy. But all you have to have is one old piece of equipment or really bad driver to mess your machine up. I'm curious about the people complaining that the G5 does not run Microsoft's windows emulation program and gave it a very low rating as a result. That 1) misses the point of getting an Apple and 2) blaims the Apple product for Microsoft deciding not to support Apple's product line.

I am very impressed by the speed and efficiency of the HPE-250f. Unlike most people who purchase this system, i am not an avid gamer. I am a designer that uses the Adobe CS5 suite and Lightroom to its fullest potential. So i hope this review helps those who are looking a solid design computer without wanting to spend more on a Mac (I'm not a Mac hater by any means... just on a budget). I give it 2 thumbs up so far, including the fact that there is not much "bloatware" on this HP - and I am actually liking the HP advisor toolbar.I also wanted to add info regarding the graphics card. The HP website and Amazon's specs regarding the graphic card outputs seem to vary a bit. I was happy to see that when i received the PC that there were x2 DVI outputs (not just one dual), x1 hdmi, etc... the VGA output is created by using a supplied DVI-VGA adapter.The tower is clean, and very quiet. My only knock so far is that the USB slots on the front where I plug my receiver in for my wireless keyboard is right above the CD bay... which gets bumped with my hand when i put in or take out a CD if I am not careful - Not a big deal, but still something to pay attention to.------------------Review update Sept 18, 2010Unfortunately, I am having some issues with the Hitachi hard drive that came with this system. It is a little too noisy with random clicking every now and then - which makes me cringe in fear. Upon further review, I found that this hard drive has a high failure rate. The good news is that HP offered to send me a new one once I isolated the sound. The bad news was that I had to provide them a credit card info due to the fact that it was considered a "collateral part." In this day and age, I'm a little hesitant to provide certain information - especially due to the fact that that I have dealt with 3+ cust service reps on multiple emails.All and all it is a very good machine (originally gave it 5 stars), however, part of every purchase is the warranty. And in this case, I was a little disappointed.

Yet one more "dead on arrival"

Another computer delivered that doesn't even power up and I'm enough of a technician to know that the power supply is bad in this thing. HP is so busy shipping these things that they don't properly test them. It's cheaper for HP to let the end user do the final testing and have Amazon ship the defective ones back and forth.Inconvenient for us but I'm sure HP considers it a good business decision.

Abysmal Customer Service for a DEAD product

DO NOT BUY HP.I received this product from newegg.com on 11/9/10. There was nothing displaying on my monitor. Tried several configurations of monitor/cord/port; still nothing. I got on HP chat and the CSR determined that the CPU was fried (a BRAND NEW COMPUTER). I sent it in 11/11/10. Received it back 11/19/10 with NO POWER CORD. Purchased one while waiting on hold for HP to send me a replacement. Got it home, plugged it in, the same exact symptoms. Got back on chat. The CSR now thinks it's the graphics card. Would I be so kind to send it back and they'll fix it and "so sorry for the inconvenience".DID NO ONE TEST THIS COMPUTER BEFORE THEY SENT IT BACK TO ME?! They had my power cord; I know they could have checked this.I asked to have a technician come to my home; I was denied. I asked for escalation to a Case Manager. Got a reference number and called HP. After being on the phone with one gentleman for 20 minutes, he tells me his department only deals with printers. (???) He transfers me to the desktop department, where they tell me that I have to wait for a Case Manager to contact ME in 24-48 hours. I told him this was unacceptable and to get someone NOW. He put me on hold. After ten minutes, I was transferred back to the beginning of the phone tree. Basically, he didn't want to deal with me.I have been given the runaround for 12 days now, and I do not trust this company to actually FIX my computer. My BRAND NEW COMPUTER. Meanwhile, they try to accuse newegg.com of doing something untoward, which I'm sure will really please newegg to hear.PLEASE: DO NOT BUY HP PRODUCTS. Buyer beware.

Great System

I actually bought this because of my recent problems with Dell system quality, order fulfillment and customer service. I found good reviews about this system on cnet, so I gave it a try. It sets up easily, is super fast and super quiet. My husband loves it. You have to set up your own recovery disks. It takes four dvd's for system default backup image and drivers and one cdr for recovery boot disk. The chicklet keyboard is a little odd, so my husband kept his old keyboard. I recommend this system for anyone who wants a fast, easy system, that doesn't have to customize an order.

Very fast, and very quiet!

I was surprised how quiet this computer is . . what a bonus that is. It is very fast as well. I have experimented with AMD microprocessors, but it is best to pay a bit more and get the Intel model instead. I haven't had a moment of trouble with this PC, so can't anything about customer support. My guess is that it is mediocre. I have a two year warranty on it because I put it on a special Platinum credit card. Hopefully will never have to use it.My model Gateway DX4840-15 came with 8gb memory. It also has a wireless LAN card included, which I didn't think was very useful on a desktop model. Would have preferred a blu-ray drive instead.In terms of "bloatware", there is very little of it. I liked the free Norton Anti-virus trial, and the DVD Player PowerDVD 9 really improved the display of my videos.Well done!

great value

I needed to replace a 3 year old office desktop with a noisy fan (which I will repair when the transfer is complete.) The Gateway SX2850-33 got a great review from CNET but it seemed cramped, so I looked further, and this model met my needs. (The -11e model was about $100 cheaper but had an i3 processor). Lots of memory (6GB) and disk space (1TB), and an i5 processor with Windows 7 64 bit. There are similar models from Dell and elsewhere in this price range, but the Gateway has nice touches (10 USB ports for example). I ordered on a Saturday and it was delivered on Monday afternoon (via Amazon 2 days service, what a treat). No problems out of the box, and quiet (after all the high pitched noises of the old machine). I deleted the additional programs supplied (Norton, Office trial) - the bloat was not too bad. I next used Windows 7 EASY TRANSFER to move over 250 Gb of files on the network from my old machine - it ran overnight. Then I had to reinstall my favorite programs which took another day (such as Skype, Picasa, Office 2010, Chrome, AVAST! free virus protection). In two days I had a working machine and took the old one off line (but have it handy in case I missed something) with the only minor irritation of having to rebuild all my history files and cookies e.g. email name recognition; but that is just part of the process. It's work. I'll probably install a second DVD writer in a few months for disk-to-disk copying.This model appears significantly faster than the older machine, so I am very pleased with the purchase and exercise.

meets my needs

On account of the bad reputation of Windows Vista, I kept my old klunker Compaq Windows XP machine until Windows 7 came out.I got this HP Slimline and am very pleased. Got it with an hp 2009m monitor which seems to be the predominant monitor people tend to match it up with.The fact that I was using a very old klunky machine no doubt prejudices me in the direction of being pleased with the new machine. But for what it is worth I am indeed very pleased.I pretty much just use the PC for web surfing- I suspect for games you might want a higher end one. I didn't realize when I bought this computer that it only has the VGA interface to the monitor, not the more advanced digital ones. For my uses of the PC the interface is fine, but if you use your PC for videos you might want to look into it further.I am pleased that the machine boots up in about a minute, my old PC took about a half hour, possibly some of that was due to viruses or something.Along with the PC I bought a copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student version, there is a discount if you buy it along with a new PC.It is nice to have a computer that responds promptly, in contrast to my old PC which ran like molasses at times.So, I am grading this computer on an easy curve because it doesn't take much for a PC to be infinitely better than my old klunker.But, for what it's worth, I like this machine a lot.

really good PC

My laptop broke so i needed a cheap PC and came across this. To be honest i wasnt expecting much of anything at this price, but its truly awesome.Its running multicore processor so its really good for movie editing and other graphical needs, which i bought it for. Its stuper fast with all of my programs too, Photoshop movie editing, word, final draft etc...Its great. Runs them all efficently. Ive had them all opened at one time doing differnt things and the PC has yet to lag out and load for anything. I kinda wish it was Core 2 Duo or some other type of Processor, but the oens they put in it are not low grade, they are right there with the Core 2 Duos.The case itself is really nice, I like the slim design and how well it looks. I opened it up and internally the PC is sound too, everything is set up great. There are plenty of fans to keep it cool, the thing doesnt make a single sound AT ALL unless you load a disc. The is one express PCI slot that is blocked though, i dont know why.The bad? Internally it hard to find certain parts for the computer because its a slim deisgn so the parts need to be specially fitted. For example graphics cards, tv tuner cards etc...Its not any more expensive to buy or any harder to find, they just dont make the super high end graphics cards like that yet. It also only comes with built in graphics which is purely to run windows 7 properly and certain programs. It will not run any games on its own so you will NEED a graphics card, I got one for 30 bucks. It comes with alot of programs you dont really need. While some of the HP programs are useful to me now, I dont need things like Norton useless anti virus.Overall Im impressed. Being a film person, IT tech guy, and a PC lover i wouldnt expect anything less from HP. And no the disc tray didnt jam...

OK system if you're expectations aren't very high

If you're looking for:-A small form factor case-Won't be moving or touching it much (physically)-Don't plan on expanding it with additional cards-All of the garbage software from the manufacture (which clogs the system)Then this is the system for you!We purchased (10) of these units, and with great tweaking some are still running, but the majority are dead with:-Bad power supplies-Crashed hard drives-Faulty network cards-Wireless that just stopped workingI do not recommend this unit to anyone who isn't interested in 'tinkering' with technology.
