Well thought out delivery of the Windows 8 experience
By Eric L. Fletcher
The HP Envy 23-d030 23-Inch Desktop is HP's top of line all in one desktop computer for use with the new Windows 8 experience. Windows 8 is all about tiles and touch. All of the major functions are displayed in tiles (although the regular old desktop is available for Windows 7 power users). And HP worked very hard to integrate the multitouch functions into how you use (and think) about the Envy. With 10 point touch- the screen is now a true replacement for the keyboard. But a nice HP wireless keyboard and mouse are included (and work well with Windows 8, which matters with some of your apps). The packing was well done, and the instructions were clear. A nice bonus were the helpful videos in the HP tiles section. Consider watching those mandatory, as you will flounder a bit learning the needed gestures and "charms" without them. I tried to dive right in, and was rather frustrated until I watched the videos. Now its pretty intuitive. In fact, my Windows 7 machine now has a few finger prints on its monitor from me instinctively touching the screen. I also got a chance to use HP's Customer Service. The little USB dongle which enables the wireless keyboard and mouse was missing. I fired up the online chat support with rather low expectations. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. After 15 minutes, a new wireless mouse and dongle were ordered for me. Even better, they sent it overnight FedEx! I had it the next day, no muss no fuss. Nice to see the "Award Winning Service" isn't some empty slogan- HP means it. There will be more HP products in my future.Setup was pretty easy overall. The Envy comes with b/g/n WiFi receiver built in- I just let it on my network and it was ready to go. While HP doesn't harass you the instant the machine is activated to register, I eventually did register it with an helpful Windows 8 app they included. After I did, it offered to uninstall itself-- clever. The only trialware of note was the Norton Antivirus- it was a bit obnoxious about getting you to purchase the full version. Don't be a sucker. Go to the control panel, uninstall that junk and turn on the quality Windows Defender and Firewall- both are well designed, work great and are free and already on your computer. Don't forget to run Windows Update- there were plenty of critical updates waiting. All in all, after an hour I had the computer updated, organized and how I like it.So how does it run? The 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 is more power than most applications will ever need. And starting with 6 gigs of RAM certainly is a nice touch as well. Plenty of future proofing in that combination. The 23 inch screen is bright and clear and runs at 1920 x 1080 pixels, perfect for blue ray DVDs and streaming HD movies. Gaming is doable as well. While Crisis II isn't in your future due to the built in Intel graphics card- I was able to run Civilization 5 on the Envy without issue.Other things that stood out to me- its really quiet. Its a nice exterior design overall. And the Envy seems "friendly", almost cheerful. My wife, who isn't a computer person normally took to the Envy right away. 30 seconds after showing her how it works, she was happily poking away at the various tiles and Windows 8 Apps. I have a feeling it won't be long before she claims it.In summary, I was very pleased and more that a little surprised at the HP Envy. It really is the best showcase of everything Microsoft is trying the achieve with Windows 8. While some users may not like the touch and tile orientation of Windows 8 over the Desktop/Mouse/Keyboard of Windows 7, I didn't mind it. Having been a long term iPhone and iPad user- I get the touch screen revolution. This is where home computers (and eventually our TVs) are going. Other than hardcore gaming and professional level video editing, there wasn't much the cheerful Envy wouldn't be good at. In my book, the HP Envy 23-d030 Desktop is the definitive Windows 8 experience.

I love it. The perfect way to experience Window 8's touch screen optimization.
By S. Power
Windows 8 is designed for use with a touch screen. If you are shopping for a tablet or a convertible laptop, there are plenty of options out there to take advantage of the touch screen interface. Unfortunately though, for those of us who'd prefer a larger screen, there weren't many options, until now. With its 23" screen, and high resolution, this all-in-one from HP is the perfect complement to Windows 8's touch screen.Touch. The touch screen interface works flawlessly and is precise and accurate as any tablet.Speed. This computer is blazing fast. You aren't sacrificing any performance by getting this machine. Only gamers or other real "power-users" will find the dual core i5 processor to be lacking.Features. This machine comes with all of the features that most computer consumers need.I really feel this machine is a no-comprises alternative for consumers who want to get the most out of Windows 8 on something other than a tablet or 13" convertible. It sounds and looks great, and is a really well-made and exquisitely designed package from HP.I highly recommend you check this machine out. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if I failed to address an area that you are curious about.

Vastly improved
By A.M.Boughey
I own a HP TouchSmart IQ506 which I bought for $1400 back in 2008, very advanced for it's time, but full of glitches, bogged down with the pedestrian Vista, and ultimately died after a couple of years.I was therefore a little skeptical about another "all in one" - the perennial question? If one part of it goes wrong, you lose everything, and where that was true when the screen went out on my old one, I feel confident this will last better.I have to say I love it, it's the best of both worlds - iPad touch-ability and Apps out the wazoo, and the power of a desktop PC, and all the features that includes. The initial setup was a breeze, including the wireless set up, Bluetooth, full media suite, and main App style screen. It's running Windows 8 naturally, which I am still slowly adapting too, but seems quick and very capable. With an Intel A4, and 6GB of RAM (more would have been nicer) it is very responsive, of course at the moment it's new, and hasn't been bogged down with programs. The interface is vastly improved, the touchscreen is very responsive, and very easy to get used too - a pull from the right side of the screen at any time shows the main menu, if you go to desktop, you may feel a little lost as there is no Start Menu or Windows button, everything is geared for the touch and swish. That said the wireless keyboard and mouse are very nice, and the integrated sound and speakers are more than capable. The 23" looks bigger than it is, and the unit is naturally quite heavy, so you will need a sturdy desk or table to sit it on.Integrated DVD and 6 USB ports as well as Ethernet are standard. The 6 in 1 media reader and built in webcam are also a nice touch. So that's it in a nutshell, there's obviously a lot more, including a lot of software, and a bucket load of free apps to download. You will need to set up a Microsoft account if you don't have one already for most of the downloads, and the anti virus while free is only 60 days - and they want $50 to renew it - my advice, once it runs out buy Kasperksy.Time will tell, as I said at the moment it's still new to me, and while it isn't a graphics powerhouse, or a gamers fun-house, it does walk the line nicely between the fun of a tablet and the utility of a desktop, all in one nice package, I mean you only need one outlet! If I could change anything, I would have made the base removable for wall mounting on a nice swing bracket, but that's just me.Yes there are better desktop PC bundles around for similar money, but if you want the sleek design and the ability to Tap, pinch, rotate, arc and flick your way through your content - this is for you. There are smaller, and cheaper models available with HP connected remote ability from a smartphone or tablet, but I like the bigger screen.I gave it 5 stars, generous? Maybe - but it's such an improvement on my old one, I'm very impressed.
