This is my first iMac so I can't compare it to the previous versions except the ones I saw at the Apple store when comparing the overall dimensions and thickness of this latest 2012 iMac.PACKAGING - Includes 21.5" iMac, Charging cable, Wireless keyboard, and Magic Mouse. Like most Apple's products, the packaging is thoughtfully done. All tape pieces are easily removed with the individual tabs attached to them. After set up it has a clean look on my desk, there is no clutter due to the fact that the keyboard and mouse connect wirelessly. Opening the box to setting it up took maybe 5 minutes tops.FORM FACTOR - This iMac is super thin from the sides and light enough for one-handed portability if required. Looking at it from the front, it seemed only marginally different from its predecessor but the difference was very noticeable from the side. The back is slightly curved at the center and I am guessing all the components are packed in this bulge at the center back. The front glass seems to sit more flush with the body compared to the earlier version which had a tiny little gap. Has a super sleek look to it overall.SCREEN - Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this iMac is its screen. Given the amount of real estate you get combined with the stunning LED-backlit display, it's a pleasure using the screen with its vibrant colors and low glare. Apple claims this model has 75 percent less glare than previous versions - there's no way for me to measure this but suffice it to say that even with the screen turned off, the screen is not really reflective. Once it's turned on, the reflections die down even further. Images are crisp and pictures we have taken with our DSLR camera seem further enhanced given the resolution of the screen.PORTS and CONNECTIONS - Apple did away with the optical drive in this version, which means that to read/burn CDs or DVDs, we can either connect an external drive like Apple's Superdrive to the USB port, or feed off another PC/Mac (this has to be on the same network) that has a built-in optical drive. If you are considering getting an external drive, I personally would recommend the Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS External DVD-Writer - Black which performs the same function and is $40 cheaper than Apple's super drive. For the initial set up, I was able to wirelessly transfer all files from my old PC to the iMac using the "Migration Assistant" utility on the iMac - it took a minute to start the process and all files transferred themselves in about 6 hours over the Wi-Fi network. Didn't have the need for an external drive, though that would have been a faster process.On the back, there is a SDXC memory card slot, couple of Thunderbolt ports, headphone jack, USB ports, and an ethernet port. It's good they are at the back since they avoid cable clutter from the desk, but connecting wires into them takes that small effort of getting up and plugging in the cable at the back. Not a major issue for me, the only port I will need to use is the USB port for my printer which doesn't support wireless connection.HARDWARE - Tech specs are all specified above in the product details of the listing. That said, with a 1TB hard drive, 2.9Hz quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory (split into two 4GB slots), this Mac basically has more than enough in terms of processing and storage capacity for my needs. Graphic designers and users that require super memory or processing prowess, they can perhaps judge for themselves if this will suffice.ACCESSORIES - The iMac comes with a wireless keyboard and a magic mouse. The keyboard is a standard Apple keyboard, but I have found it to be slightly small for me personally. Takes some getting used to. Instead of using the Magic Mouse, I had considered getting Apple's Magic Trackpad because that is very similar to the MBPro trackpad that I have used extensively. However, having used the mouse for a few days now, I am sticking with it - just a personal preference. The Magic Mouse also lets you scroll down lengthy web pages without having to move to the side to grab the scroll bar. Just a swipe of the finger on the mouse moves the page down or up. It can also be configured to register right clicks. Somewhat similar in terms of functionality to the magic trackpad.BOTTOMLINE - There are two versions of the 21.5" iMac, one with a 2.7Hz i5 processor and the other with a 2.9Hz i5 at an additional $200. I went with the 2.7Hz which is good enough for me personally. Given the sleek form factor, absolutely gorgeous display, pretty good quality built-in speakers, front facing camera, and more than sufficient technical specs for the ordinary user like me, this is a great buy. If portability is not an issue, this in my opinion is definitely the device of choice over the MB Pro.

This is my eighth Mac. The sleek slim appearance of the new iMacs is a matter of taste. It does mean laptop chips are used to save space (and power), along with a compact, slower hard drive. This is not exactly the latest and greatest technology in all respects. The absence of an optical drive (CD/DVD) in the new 2012 iMacs is highly controversial. Apple is pushing us toward internet connections instead, increasingly wireless, and deeper into the Apple ecosystem of iCloud and App Stores that it controls, and gets 30% from. Question is, how often do YOU need CDs on your Mac? If you do need a drive, Amazon has several that are actually less expensive, faster, and more reliable than Apple's own optical "SuperDrive." So hopefully we save a little money not getting one built-in. Most of them can sit quietly on the iMac's stand discreetly under the screen, stacked with a compact back-up drive if you wish. (Lacking a CD drive could be much more problematical with a laptop.)Less explicable is omitting FireWire, a connector that Apple pushed so hard, and now abandons in favor of Thunderbolt (to which few products currently can connect), and right alongside speedy USB 3.0 (a great improvement on USB 2.0)! There's no longer a pulsing light to let you know a dark screen is only sleeping.The new screen, allegedly 75% less glossy (reflective) than the previous models, is a great selling point, IMO. There IS less glare, while the bezel is as shiny as ever (lovely fingerprints), but maybe you don't have to grab the iMac so hard to adjust its angle, for the machine is much lighter than before. The screen is a bit shorter as well as wider than the old 20" model. Because it stands a little lower, it should be easier on your neck if you wear bifocals.I am now using a trackpad and gestures, another direction Apple is pushing us (a la iPhone and iPad). I hated the one on an old iBook, but the sensitivity now is much better controlled to eliminate close passes in favor of an actual touch--all sorts of touches in fact. (No idle drumming of fingertips!) I find it odd that in order to get a "right click" I need to also hold down the Shift key, just like in the old one-button mouse days! I think trackpad use may be tiring: it takes a harder push than on a mouse to produce a "click," and there's no place to rest hand or wrist without activating something unexpected, eh? The trackpad and keyboard both slant up rather than downwards, and have no tilt adjustment. I thought ergonomists showed the healthy trick was to keep your wrist straighter, by keeping your hand level, or even sloping downwards away from you.Customer service: I spent a very pleasant 1.5 hours online with two Apple technicians getting OS X Mail to work. For the first time in years I can open Apple's OS X Mail (rather than continue with a different email client). These folks are amazingly good! This experience is also a warning about using Migration Assistant: it can bring forward arcane bad settings from your earlier computer. It can also "break" some of your non-Apple software (e.g., Microsoft, Adobe, Epson), requiring you to re-enter product codes, or even insert an original program disk!!! (You do still have them, right?) Apparently not a problem if you bought them recently from Apple's own App Store. The Apple website has vital information on what to do on your old machine before using Migration Assistant.Otherwise, setup is fast and amazingly easy. Apple does it right. It then took me about a minute per GB to migrate old files, twice the forecast time. Startup time with OS 10.8.2 on this machine is just 20 seconds!

If you are looking for a great desktop computer this is a great choice! This is my first Mac purchase and I must say that I absolutely love it and for those who are thinking about coming over from a windows machine I will say that learning how to use OS X is very quick and simple. So how does this computer run? It runs quickly and produces very little heat. I play Guild Wars 2 on it for hours at a time and never hear the fan and the back gets only slightly warm, and this is playing on mostly all high settings. One thing to note to those reading this is that I do have the fusion drive so it will run a bit quicker than this model here on amazon. Next thing I want to mention is the sound on the built in speakers. The quality is pretty good considering how much room Apple had to fit in the speakers, which is very little because of how thin this machine is. The one downside for me is that there is very little bass but considering most people who really want good sound will already have an external speaker set this really shouldn't be a bother. The screen on this machine is very nice, they made it more glare resistant than previous models and that works pretty well except with very bright direct light. The quality of the picture is fantastic, its very nice when playing games and watching tv/movies. I have now had my iMac for 2 months and I have yet to find something negative about it, I have had no issues with the operating system or the machine itself. I know the wait for getting this computer is still pretty long, about 2-3 weeks, but If you are able to wait that long to get a new computer the wait is worth it. One more thing to add is that if you decide to buy this computer make sure you get exactly what you need, and think ahead a few years because once you buy it its very difficult to upgrade anything due to the difficulty of opening the computer because of the laminated screen. If you only use you computer for everyday uses like for mail, searching the internet, and watching Netflix you will be fine with the standard configuration on the lower end model.
