A good machine in nearly every application but ...
By D. Steingrimsson
I picked this unit up as I was in the market to replace my 8 year old Gateway desktop (GT5268E). For ages it was showing signs of dying (system crashes/freezes or instability in XP, 7, Ubuntu 10.10/11.10/12/10). Well, it finally kicked the bucket due to an error with BIOS system that could not be fixed as the system was deprecated for support. No replacement hard drive or power supply was going to fix that issue (BIOS related as system logs would tell me), so I found myself suddenly in the market for a PC. I don't want to go on in great detail about my needs, but suffice it to say I just needed something that could handle Flash/Silverlight video playback (YouTube, Hulu, HBOGo, Netflix), video codec playback support, and general web browsing. From my perspective, any 2013 product on the market should meet these basic needs. OS wasn't critical to me, since the browser is the primary tool I would end up using. Looking at cheap options, I sort of stumbled on the Q190. The initial appeal of the Q190 was the following items:- Cost was sub $400- System specs exceeded my previous machine (Dual Core Centrino 1.5GHz DDR3 1333 MHz vs Dual Core Pentium 2.8GHz DDR2 533 MHz) (ignore the clockspeed differences)- Could manage 1080p content with VGA and HDMI output- Many USB ports (the Q190 has 4 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports)- This particular Amazon SKU comes with the Lenovo N5902 Enhanced Multimedia Remote with Backlit Keyboard (57Y6678) that from what I could tell didn't come with the unit sold directly from Lenovo's website (normally retails for $80 MSRP)- Came with a decent OS (Windows 8 instead of a Linux distro or no OS as some of the other cheaper options have) (not critical, but this is a perk for me)I ordered next day delivery, and got the product as scheduled. Once received, for some reason, I noticed the Lenovo security tape strip had been opened, but all of the contents were still sealed and unopened. My initial impressions:- This thing is small! Side by side to an Airport Extreme 802.11N (5TH GEN) it is as tall and only slightly longer than the router.- Plastic build, but very appealing aesthetically (nice color scheme, very clean design)- Has all the items you need from the get go (Mouse/Keyboard/Stand) and more (monitor/TV rear mounting bracket)- Initial set up took about 5-10 minutes- Fan is audible, but not blaring. If you have this in the open in front of your TV, you can hear it when it's on, but it does not overpower you with noise. I never heard it once whine up or get as loud as you would hear on a comparable unit (ex. laptop fans at 40-80% speed). Behind your TV / inside a cabinet / other places, you won't even hear it. I was fine with it, as I could still hear my TV without issue. So, I was plugged in and fully set up from open to finish within 15 minutes. One of the most painless install processes ever. Windows 8 looks great on my television, and seemed quick in every regard (switching between Metro and Desktop, browser launch, application installs, network speed, etc). I installed the app for Netflix - very nice UI, quick, no issues with the playback. I didn't look at many other streaming apps as my intent was not to buy this product for Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime access since I have both an Apple TV and Roku that serves streaming services just fine. No preload bloat was a nice thing to see - although it comes with McAfee, it was trivial to uninstall (but did require uninstalling in both Metro and in Desktop application managers). Provided you have your own preferred AntiVirus, or like to live dangerously, not a big deal. No other bloat from what I could gleam (Lenovo Rescue System and PowerDVD are both full functioning applications that both serve a good purpose in my eyes).Alright, cool, this thing is going to work out fine! So I fire up HBO GO in the Windows 8 Metro browser, but when I start the stream, I see a very slight tick in the video playback about every 7 seconds or so (audio playback was fine, generally the video was fine too). Then I go to YouTube and check out streams in 480p, 720p, and 1080p. Same behavior! Did some googling around, looked at solutions that worked for other comparable machines with similar behavior. Tried using the Windows 8 Desktop browser, performance was slightly better, but behavior was still there. Installed Firefox version 19 and Flash Player 11, Chrome version 25, then relaunching Windows 8 Desktop with the installed Flash Player 11. The very best performance I got was Windows 8 Desktop Browser + Flash Player 11. The tick was now by a wide margin much reduced - even the wife was OK with it (even though she could still see it). I, however, could not get past this. Maybe I'm the largest fringe case in the world, but I can't bring myself to keeping a machine that will be my dedicated unit for the next 5 years if it can't play (in my opinion) something that is standard in 2013 technology. Yes, I know Flash is bloaty. Yes, I know native or even local codec playback is usually better. But in my needs, this cannot be met with this machine. Simply put, it cannot do 480p and higher playback in Flash. It's a 1080p capable device, but not with certain applications that provide 1080 playback.I really wanted to keep this device. Everything else about it is great. I love the look of it, I liked the included HTPC keyboard/mouse it comes with, I even liked Windows 8. I'm certain that for 90% of the market, this is going to be a great little unit. While I didn't play with codec content, I know for a fact it will play your MKV/AVI/DIVX/H264 content without issue - programs like VLC let me play these containers just fine even on my very old Pentium (see above for the specific system). Native DVD/Blu Ray are also going to function if you add a USB drive - the integrated HD3000 GPU is going to manage these functions without issue (speculated, but generally internet seems to support this). If you have a student or need a decent HTPC, I would still recommend this device. It just couldn't serve me in my specific needs, so I am returning it and picking up a Mac Mini (way more money, but comparable desktop footprint). One more item that I want to comment on is the Lenovo Rescue System. This software is a fantastic supplement to Windows 8. In a couple of clicks I could make a bootable backup that I could use, plus it would do a snap shot of the system that wasn't triggered by a Windows Update (I realize the functionality is similar to Windows restore points, but a little different and more convenient for the layman). I was really grateful for this tool as it made returning this device much easier - I just made it restore to initial system state (OEM first start). 10 minutes later, I was prompted with the same install process. Very cool!!Amazon made the return simple, dropping it off in the mail tomorrow. Excellent customer service, as usual.--------A couple of quick notes since these aren't immediately apparent on the product page:- Yes it comes with the Lenovo remote- There is a thin front flap (that blends very well with the design) providing access to 2 USB ports (not sure what USB speed), a Line In (microphone) port, and a 3.5mm Line Out (headphone) port- It has 4 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports. I couldn't figure out which ports were which. 4 ports in the back, 2 ports in the front- It has VGA and HDMI. Both function just fine

NICE MACHINE
By Jojo
I purchased this to replace another nettop machine I've had for years and couldn't find a single review anywhere, because this is a new model. I took a chance and got it, anyway. My needs are basic. I don't do any work on it or anything involved, and it's not my main computer. THis is for the bedroom hooked into my large screen tv. Basically, I just use it to surf the web and download music from Amazon for my ipod. It doesn't have a dvd drive, but I really wouldn't use it anyway. If i needed to, I could hook up an external one. I don't want anything large in my room to take up more space, so this unit is perfect. In size, the closest thing that i can compare it to is my kindle fire. Now that's small! Windows 8 is a bit of a learning curve, but it's not hard to master, and now I like it. The set up is five minutes and you're ready to use the computer. Windows 8 has really simplified the initial set up with for of so questions and you're ready to go. What is not of any use to me is the remote hand-held keyboard that's about the size of your palm. I got a wireless mouse and regular size keyboard which I prefer and is much easier to use. A word of caution: Don't install dongles for both a the handheld and another keyboard. It made my screen go crazy moving up and down and all over the place after working perfectly for a few hours. It took me 20 minutes to figure out what the problem was. I've since taken the dongle for the handheld unit out of the USB, as I really don't intend to use it anyway (Dongle is the a USB plug which allows the computer and wireless device to communicate). Regarding a regular wireless keyboard and mouse: You have to get one approved for Windows 8, as my old one for Vista wasn't compatible. It's a fast machine and I really don't see any difference in using it from any other computer I've used, so I really have to say that it' great because it suits my needs. I don't game or anything, so I can't comment on it, and I have no intention to stream movies, but I'm told it would be fine for that too. Comes with trial McAfee virus protection which I will keep. Lenovo will allow you to customize memory, etc when ordering from their own website, but I was happy with what was being offered right here. I'm giving it 4 stars for now as i've only just gotten it and things might change in the future.
