5best bang for the buck
By RKeezy
for $299 and free shipping? i think this is a steal. even the blowouts at the local frys can't beat this deal. bought an extra 2gb of ram to add and the system is really snappy. bought it for an aunt who is in school. needs it for mostly word processing, web surfing, watching videos and listening to music. with 4gb of ram, i think it is overkill and she abs loves it.pros: comes with an empty ram slot. so glad they didn't take up both ram slots with 1gb modules. instead they used up one slot with a 2gb module, so you can add an extra one right away. big plus for that.cons: all those darn hp, ereader, promotional software that comes pre-loaded. i spent a good 30 minutes, uninstalling most of those useless tools. onboard video card uses up ram and is nothing special. so gamers would probably need to upgrade the video card.other than that, i am totally satisfied

5I needed a basic machine and at $299 this was it.
By T. Morris
While sitting there reading a news story the hard drive on my dead Dell clicked once and then was forever inaccessible and unrecognized. I tried to buy a Dell "custom built" without software I don't want, like McAfee, and that's impossible. We have 5 computers and started when DOS 6.0 was all there was and it seems each year the machines are more like toasters that have to be replaced all too frequently because they bog down, fail, have corrupted files, registry errors, older operating systems that don't support newer software and hardware and/or can't be used online without some security software that clogs them up even more. Next time one fails I'll be more prepared and will try patching it up before I buy a new machine... they're just not what they were, Windows will always change leaving yours unsupported and tossing all that memory and other working parts seems a total waste.I purchased this computer because Dell was unable to meet their shipping date and it kept sliding more into the future. When they gave me the option to cancel I jumped on it. I was already hesitant to do the Dell thing again since the computer I was replacing was a Dell with a dead hard drive. Anyway, I pulled the trigger on this one at $329.54 because it was in stock and it showed "shipping soon" in the order details right after I placed the order. I was a happy camper and expected to see it delivered soon. However, Amazon let it sit in that limbo status and after 5 days it still didn't show shipped, the price had dropped to $299.99 and I contacted Customer Service for them to honor the lower price or let me cancel and reorder... Amazon cancelled the order! I immediately placed it again and asked why they chose that option, mentioned that I needed it yesterday and I wasted 2 weeks with Dell and another week with Amazon. They shipped it UPS 2-day for $31.77 and then credited me the shipping cost back for canceling the order rather than shipping it at the lower price so I was once again a happy camper. So much for my history and now here's something about this computer. It's pretty much a bare bones machine with lots of software and intro packages you probably don't need. It comes with a nice keyboard, mouse and that's about it. There's no manual, no discs for any installed software and no recovery disc. The RAM is easily upgradeable and though most places that sell it will tell you to install matched pairs of 2G to get to 4G for best performance but you can add just one 2G stick and it seems to work fine. I wanted a full version of Word and a spreadsheet, not the limited one with ads that's pre-installed, so I installed them from a Microsoft Works package I had and when it asked me to enter the Product Key it successfully activated the full version of what was already installed so I had everything I wanted. This computer wasn't purchased for computing much of anything. It's used for stock trading, charts, word processing, news and some streaming video and all that works fine. The DVD drive has a little door over it and when opened it covers the button you need to press to close it (see pic) and it's really hard to get in there to press it for closure. Since there's no manual and we went from XP to Windows 7 there's a lot of time spent online learning how to do little stuff like opening a second window but that's what I've come to expect from Microsoft. We also had a 3-User Norton 360 and the dead Dell was the third machine it was on but Norton allowed us to transfer the remaining 9 months of service over to this computer and they sent us a link to remove the trial version of Norton that's installed on the Compaq. The biggest negative is that the only recovery option for this machine resides on the hard drive. I'd recommend you make a bootable recovery disc as soon as you receive the machine and do regular backups. If your drive dies quickly like mine did you are left with nothing to start over again... no operating system, no programs and certainly no files, data or pics that you didn't backup... and without a bootable disc you can't even try a recovery. You can also do a clone of the hard drive on something with a lot of storage like a portable hard drive and that can be a life saver with cheap or free software. All hard drives will likely fail sooner or later. Losing a hard drive and all that's on it in the blink of any eye like mine went is a real shock. I purchased a new hard drive and mirrored the existing hard drive of another machine to it and copied everything I might want from our other computers to it in case another complete crash ever happens I can just install the hard drive and we're back in business. I also added a new hard drive and wireless card to the dead Dell to connect to our large screen TV for movies and the laptop we had dedicated for that purpose is now available for other things. All in all it seems to be a good machine and at $[...], large hard drive (actually 453 GB with 427 free) and enough RAM to operate, plus free shipping, you'll spend a lot of time trying to beat the deal. By the way, this machine is equipped exactly like the one I had ordered at the same price from Dell on their promo offer Dell charged me sales tax so this one worked out to be even less than Dell's best deal of the month. I went with 5 stars but the machine gets 4 and Amazon service bumped it up to 5.
