5Ideal system for demanding users; excellent choice for entertainment and gaming
By Carlos Santiago
This review is for the Dell XPS X8500-6842WT Desktop Computer System. As an owner of this desktop PC model, I wanted to share this review to expand on Amazon's product description and to consolidate additional specifications and features from several sources and from my own personal experience with the system. Hopefully this will help you make a more informed decision. I believe that Amazon's product information of this system really doesn't make it justice. It wasn't until I thoroughly researched and compared features here and via other sources, that I got convinced that this system really has everything a serious user needs now, plus it also offers room for future expansion. This Dell model, purchased directly from Amazon, is the equivalent Dell XPS 8500 "Special Edition" on their website, dell dot com.I read somewhere on the Internet that the Dell XPS 8500 is considered "a mainstream desktop or a mid-range gaming PC". This for me sums up the best description of this system. It is ideal for those of us who rely on our computers to keep our personal business in order while also providing high-end capabilities for entertainment. The main differences between this Special Edition system model from the standard edition is:Addition of SSD drive - 32Gb standard - for faster boot times12 GB of DDR3 1600Mhz RAM standard vs 8GbUpgraded video card - Radeon HD 7770 2GB DDR5 vs Radeon 7570 1GB - This is not an onboard card. It is a high-performance discrete graphic card pre-installed with the system.2TB Hard drive (7200 RPM) standard vs 1TBChassis color - very sleek looking white chassis with a shiny black front bezel - By the way, Amazon's description incorrectly states that this system comes with an entirely black chassisThe rest of the system specifications are standard as with the other XPS 8500s:- Intel i7 third generation `Ivy Bridge' processor 3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.9Ghz - Ivy Bridge has improved performance over similar 2nd generation i7 CPUs, plus they also added improvements in core graphics processing.- USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports - The number of USB ports from Amazon's product information is off. You actually get 4 x USB 3.0 ports (2 front, 2 rear) instead of 1, plus 6 x USB 2.0 ports (4 rear, 2 top). Also, one of the two top USB 2.0 ports is configured as a Powershare port, which allows you to charge USB devices even when the computer is powered off or is in sleep state.- Built in Wifi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and Ethernet 10/100/1000 - No need to buy USB adapters or cards for wireless or Bluetooth connectivity.- Win 7 Home Premium 64-bitThe Radeon HD7770 Video card includes DVI and HDMI ports, but no VGA. For those who prefer or currently own VGA monitors, the system includes a DVI to VGA adapter/dongle.Although you usually get a price discount when buying from Amazon, you can't customize the system further like you do in Dell's web site. For me, the system would've been just perfect with a Blu-Ray burner as a standard option, however this is not a big deal as there are multiple, low cost options for Blu-ray drives right here in Amazon that can be added later. For those who are curious about the Windows Experience Index (WEI) base score for this machine, here's what I got (out of a max score of 7.9)Processor: Calculations per second -> 7.7RAM: Memory operations per second -> 7.7Graphics for Aero Desktop Performance -> 7.6Gaming Graphics - 3d business and gaming -> 7.6Primary hard disk, disk data transfer rate -> 5.9The base score is based on the lowest score, in this case 5.9, making the hard disk the overall performance "bottleneck". You can find more information about WEI in Microsoft's web site. With the above performance numbers you can safely run any current application, including modern games. Rated as "Good for Gaming" by Computer Shopper (as stated in Dell's web site) you can feel confident about playing the current library of PC games available out there. For those hard-core gamers reading this review, be aware that this is not an SLI, Cross-Fire overclocked system built to run all games at Ultra settings. However, Dell does offer a higher-end Radeon HD 7870 card option, which will place this machine right there with the big boys. By the way, the XPS 8500 power supply handles 460W, enough to handle the installed Radeon 7770 (225W) or the more powerful 7870.The XPS 8500 is ready to use out of the box, it's just a matter of clicking a few times to finish up the OS installation, personalizing your network and PC information and installing any required Windows updates. The single CD packaged with this desktop includes drivers and utilities. Documentation can be found in Dell's web site. There's really no need to use the CD during the initial power-on/configuration process, since the bundled Dell Support software along with the Windows updates will take care of all driver updates online. However, the CD might be necessary during a full system recovery, so I wouldn't just throw it away. The Operating system recovery files (Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit) is stored in a hidden recovery partition. There's no physical Windows 7 CD included with the system.PC box also includes a USB Dell keyboard and laser mouse. Monitor is not included.Dell's warranty coverage is one of the top in the industry, another reason I also felt very comfortable with buying this system.

5The perfect computer for application and database developers
By John Stephens
I bought this computer to replace another Dell XPS computer I purchased about 8 years ago. This new XPS computer exceeded my expectations. I primarily use the computer for work related functions developing web and database based applications. Debugging applications in VSTS 2010 is a breeze because applications under test compile very quickly. Running data intensive queries beome a breeze on this computer... A query that takes about 15minutes to run on my local desktop at work, executes in under 5 minutes... BIG time saver for me!Highly recommend!!!
